Reality Television

I have no idea what part of reality television is real.  I never know what to believe when it comes to those shows.  That is why I, personally, do not watch them.  However, my mom and sister love them.   They watch so many reality TV shows.  I do not know how they keep track of all of them.
One of the shows I have watched with them is Dance Moms.  This show is about "dance moms" whose daughters all dance for a very competitive dance team.  The moms all think their daughter is the best and arguments always ensue.
I did not really have a favorite character.  However, one girl really caught my attention.  Her name is Maddie.  She is supposedly the best out of all the girls.  It was really eye catching to me because although she is 12 years old, she is made out to be very stuck up and even kind of a "bitch."  The other girls on the show kind of are, too.  I hate using that word to describe little girls (or any girls).  I do not have a better way to describe it, but all the girls are portrayed in a negative light when new drama occurs on the show.  They all are portrayed as stuck up and a little cocky even thought they are so young.  It is just a strange situation on the show and is the reason I do not watch.  I feel like the show makes them act that way for the show and I do not like it.
They talk about it a little in the textbook and they do it on Dance Moms, too.  They put a ton of makeup on these young girls and dress them in certain outfits.  It basically sexualizes them at an early age.  In one episode, the girls have strip a layer of clothes off in the middle of the routine.  Reality TV is not for me.
This is just one of their dances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MmBj66_PCg

  1. This sounds like a great example of age compression. Yeah I agree with you, reality television is not for me either. None of it is real and I do not think they represent people in a true light. They are also are very gendered as well. They often portray women as supersexulized and men ready to fight at the drop of a dime. I think that reality is a burden on society.

  2. Hi Zach,

I have seen the show Dance Moms on a few occasions as well. I also think it is extremely fake and portrays women in a bad light. All the drama is manufactured. I tend to disagree with you on the little girls being portrayed as "bitches". I think they, for the most part, just get stuck going along with the drama started by their mothers. The girls tend to support each other, even when their mothers are at each others throats or when Abby is chewing one of their heads off.

Also, there is always a better way to describe someone that calling them a bitch.
