My one friend is always on Facebook, Twitter, and instagram. He posts constantly and is always on his phone. He is obsessed with social media. On Facebook, he posts a lot of photos of everything he does. However, they are only pictures where he looks good or he is doing something cool. If any of us put up a picture of him and he does not like how he looks, he will ask us to take it down.
His page is definitely made so that people who look at it will think well of him. He cares a lot about what people think of him. It is definitely his virtual personality. He will change his profile picture all the time.
His profile is definitely gendered and I think he uses it just to look good for girls. A lot of other people do this, too, though. They design their profile to make themselves seem better than they are. I think some people do this to make themselves feel better. It gives people a confidence they might not have in person.
The role of social networks in the lives of young people is becoming bigger each day. Teens' lives seem to revolve around them. Teenagers use social media all the time now and it dominates everything they do. Elementary school kids are even getting into it. My 10 year old cousin has an instagram account and she posts to it all the time. She and her friends are all obsessed and it is scary. These little kids have access to anything on the internet and they aren't even close to being adults.
I have a few friends who seem to be obsessed with social media as well. It is strange because it seems like some of them act completely differently online than they do in real life. I guess some people adopt a virtual personality and act differently because of the different audience that they are appealing to when online. Your comment about how younger kids are using social networks was really interesting to me because I do not have any younger cousins or siblings so I have not really seen this happening. It cannot be good for them to be exposed to the material on these websites at such a young age.
ReplyDeleteWow, your friend sounds super self-obsessed. Sadly, this is not uncommon. How does he have time to do the things he is taking pictures of since he spends all the time taking the pictures. Its kind of like the people who have to take perfect pictures of their meals. They end up ruining the food and not enjoying it as much as they should have since it is cold and possibly soggy by the time they eat.
