Her Story

"Passing Privilege" was the biggest thing that stood out to me in "Her Story."  Passing privilege refers to people seeing someone and referring to that person as the gender they want to be.  For example, a man that is transgender and wants to be a woman, would want to "pass" as a woman.  The former man would not want anyone to question whether or not he is a man or woman.  This is a very hard thing for trans people to deal with as they just want to fit into what is acceptable with whatever gender they want to be.
I felt as though Violet struggled with passing privilege throughout the series.  I could easily tell she was transgender.  I could tell based on the way she looked, but also with her voice and some of her actions.  Violet even talked about how she hated being worried about fitting in.  She just wanted to pass as a woman.  Violet also discusses how she does not like her big hands and is always stressed about how people will judge her.
Violet continues to struggle with passing privilege throughout the series.  However, her friend Paige, who is also transgender, seems to easily pass as a woman.  This just shows how tough it is to fit in.  Even non trans people wish to fit in.  Men who are not big and strong want to be seen as manly and are not always able to do so.  I liked the end of the show, though, where Violet finally leaves Mark and accepts who she is.
