Boys, Girls and Toys,- Oh My-

Like the little girl in the video said, toy companies design their packages to get little girls and boys to buy certain products.  The princesses and barbies are always in pink packaging, while the GI Joes are in camouflage.  The little girl perfectly describes what she sees in the toy store.  Boys can like princesses and girls can like superheroes.  However, companies design their toys to attract the gender they want playing with their toys.
The biggest thing I immediately thought of when I saw this video is nerf guns.  I have never seen a girl on an ad for nerf guns.  I mean not even one.  Every ad is a group of boys running around shooting the guns.  Maybe girls want to play with nerf guns, too.  I know my girl neighbors did when they were younger.
I looked up ads for nerf guns and this is what I found.  Image result for nerf guns adImage result for nerf guns ad  Almost every ad or packaging looks like the one on the with the male on it.  I had never seen the package with the female on it before, but of course it is called the pink crush and looks stereotypically girly. This is how most toys in a store look with a divide right down the aisle.  One side is strictly pink and girly, while the other side is blue and boyish.  Growing up I never noticed this sort of thing, but it is so obvious.  In a lot of stores the toys for boys and the toys for girls even have their own aisles.  As a boy, growing up, you weren't supposed to go look down the girls' aisle.  You were supposed to want the sports equipment or toy guns, not the princesses and dress up clothes.  Nerf did a good job by designing a line of toys for girls, but that makes it seem like girls cannot play with the boys nerf guns.  It is hard to find a toy company that is not gendered like this.

  1. I thought your discussion of the girl's rant about toy aisles was completely on point. I also found your choice of gendered toys to be very interesting. I actually have seen the "female" nerf guns in stores and got pretty upset. If Im going to have a nerf gun, I want a nerf gun. I dont want some wimpy pink thing that I will be made fun of for having. In this day and age to have to create a pink nerf gun says something pretty negative about our society.
