This article, "Subjects of Sex/Gender/Desire," was written by Judith Butler. In this article, she writes about how there is a political problem that feminism encounters. This problem is the assumption that women denotes a common identity. Women, in today's world, can be thought of as a troublesome term. This is not right. Butler writes how if one "is" a woman, which not all are, then the term fails to be exhaustive. This means that gender is not always the same, whether the difference be time period, race, or ethnicity.
Another point Judith Butler makes is about feminism. Butler states how the political assumption is that there must be a basis for feminism. Feminism must exist cross culturally. It must have a claim on the universal patriarchy in some way.
Butler created the term gender performativity. This refers to someone who likes to pretend to be a man or woman, without any instability. The effect produces "true gender." This is thought to be what the person truly wants to be. An example of this is a drag performance where men dress up like women and put on a show. This does not mean every drag performer wishes they were female, though.
I believe that if someone wants to do something and doing that said thing does not harm anyone else, then we should allow that that person to do that thing. If someone likes dressing in drag, then we should not judge them. I like sports, which is thought of as a societal norm, but I try to imagine what if it was not. What if playing sports was not normal. I would still want it to be allowed. If people enjoy pretending to be another gender, we should let them without any judgment.
