This article, written by Laura Stampler, discusses how some fashion ads today beautify violence against women. As seen in the first picture, a woman in a revealing dress is being held down on a bus by two men. Most people would see this image and not think too much of it, but it is very serious. The picture was based on fatal gang rape that happened in New Delhi. A 23 year old physiotherapy student was brought onto a bus and attacked by six men.
The picture shown in the article was "fashion photography." Some people somewhere decided that it was okay to publish this image. This was not the lone image either. It was part of a spread called the The Wrong Turn. The spread shows single Indian women fending off groups of men on a bus. Raj Shetye, an Indian photographer published the spread and honestly did not see what was wrong with what he did.
The scenes depicted in the spread were based off the brutal gang rape. The parents of the young woman who was killed spoke out against the images. They said how the publisher should be ashamed and questioned is this what we want to show the youths of the nation. Shetye claimed that he in no way meant to glamorize the act that occurred.
The crazy thing about this article is that I have probably seen ads, such as the ones shown, and probably thought nothing of it. It is unbelievable that these types of images are allowed to be shown. These images basically put rape and other bad things in a good light and that is just wrong. I hope something is done soon about this problem. However, it is hard to come up with a solution. There are freedoms people should have when it comes to creating art. In no way, however, should showing these king of actions be allowed.
